Bobby Witt Jr. is Incredible
Another three-hit game. Another Royals win. This one had some fireworks too.
We don’t always realize when we’re witnessing greatness until the moment has passed. Right now, watching the Royals is witnessing greatness when it comes to Bobby Witt Jr. The quote from the series finale of The Office comes to mind when Andy Bernard says, “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve already left them.” With Witt, we’re in the good old days. I don’t know when he’ll come back to earth a little bit, but after his fourth consecutive three-hit game, when he was three-quarters of the way to the cycle in the fourth inning, I can tell you with certainty that it wasn’t last night.
What’s truly crazy, though, is that this isn’t just a post-break surge. He was doing a lot of this before the break. Okay, maybe not at this level, but after a hitless weekend in Arlington, he is now hitting .452/.489/.821 in his last 22 games. That’s 94 plate appearances with 38 hits that include seven doubles, three triples and six home runs. He’s played 15 games in July and has hits in 14 of them, multiple hits in 10 of them and three hits in six of them. He’s hitting .508/.523/.932 with a 296 wRC+. That’s the best average, the best OBP, the best SLG and the best wRC+ in baseball. Any word I use to describe it isn’t enough.
