ItC Mailbag: Joey Wiemer, Spring Training Performance, the Royals Rotation and Much More

It's been a long time since I answered Royals questions in this format, so I decided to just do it.

The Royals play an actual baseball game tomorrow that doesn’t count for anything important, but they’ll put uniforms on against another team that also puts uniforms on, and that’s exciting. To celebrate, I wanted to get back to doing something I used to do a lot more (and will hopefully get back to in 2025) and answer some questions that my loyal readers have. I want to thank everyone for their questions. Not all will be answered below, but many will, and if you asked one that didn’t get answered, fire away again next time. I promise there will be more opportunities this season even though I was really bad about it last season.

You’ll see questions about depth, new players in the organization, catcher rankings and much more below, so I say let’s just get to the questions so you can see the great ones and my mediocre answers to them.

What do you make of Joey Wiemer? Seems so overlooked and regarded just as a "throw-in" as part of the Singer-India swap. If nothing else, can he be an upgrade over Blanco? He can replace the baserunning well enough and definitely a better glove.

I think Joey Wiemer might be getting overlooked by fans for a couple of reasons. One, he was the secondary part of that trade. And two, that trade was made months ago. I remember when the trade went down, there were plenty of people who thought he may end up being the prize of the deal. I thought that as a bit of a silly sentiment, but the best time to dream on a guy who has all sorts of tools and hasn’t put it together is the offseason. Time will tell if he can put those tools to good use, but everything points to him at least having a chance to play an important role on this team.
