Off Key and Run Off the Stage

Another poor performance by Brady Singer and the Royals were on the wrong end of a blowout.

The Royals haven’t played many games like last night. It was just the fifth game they’ve lost by five or more runs. Heck, it’s just the eighth game they’ve by four or more or runs and the 12th by three or more. So saying this doesn’t happen often would be an understatement, which might be why it’s so jarring when it does. It doesn’t mean the pitching staff hasn’t tried lately, of course. We all know about Friday night’s big win and the bad eighth inning against San Diego last homestand. A big part of why the Royals don’t get blown out is their offense is, yes, relentless. So when they aren’t, yep, that’s also jarring.

But for the fifth straight game on this homestand that’s now five games long, the Royals came to the plate for the first time in the game trailing. I don’t think anyone needs me to explain why that’s a bad thing. Last night’s culprit was Brady Singer, who threw his second straight stinker. It wasn’t all bad for him, as there were moments throughout the game that looked like the Singer that started his year so strong, but there were even more moments that looks like he comes by his 4.58 xERA honestly.
