Split Decision

It's weird what expectations do for a team. The Royals split a doubleheader, which happens a lot and won a series and, yet, it doesn't feel great right now.

While the general consensus is that splits are more likely than sweeps in a doubleheader, the reality is that it’s just not true. Believe me, I’m as surprised as you are because I bought into the conventional wisdom without ever checking into it. While splits have been more common in recent years, it appears that it’s awfully close to a 50/50 split, though I guess split isn’t the best word to use here. So when the Royals started their doubleheader yesterday against the White Sox, it seemed to me that, as the considerably better team, they had a chance to not only sweep the day but sweep another series (and clinch the season series already) against their downtrodden division foes.

They did not. But at least they didn’t get swept because they easily could have.
