GIVE ME ZERPA AND HEASLEY in the rotation next year! lol. Yes, I know it won't be this easy and he has struggled in the minors a bit. But man, I'm a sucker for someone who can command the ball within the zone and he was excellent. I'm also a sucker for rookie pitcher not getting shelled his debut and making it out of the first or second inning. Maybe the stuff for Heasley and Zerpa isn't as great but they sure look like they can pitch. At least for one night. One of my biggest frustrations with the staff in general have been the walks. So seeing Zerpa go out and walk one and Heasley go out there and walk only a couple in two starts has me excited to see more of them. Is it late September, watered down lineups.....yes but if you don't help them out, usually better things happen and its nice to see from these young guys.
I don't want to get too hung up on one start, but Zerpa's stuff looked pretty good to me. I was actually a bit disappointed in Heasley's curve in his first start, but he broke it out a lot more in the second. Neither has the upside of Lynch or Kowar or Lacy or Singer or whoever, but they've shown that they're at the very least likely serviceable depth pieces and that's useful. Like I said in the article, Zerpa's stuff absolutely plays out of the bullpen too, if nothing else.
I also saw some Quintana in there, but you know who I thought of last night as I watched Zerpa pitch? Franklin Morales. That would be a bullpen scenario, and you'd hope Zerpa would be better, but I could easily see him carving out a nice 10-year career as a serviceable lefty like that.
Yep, super easy to see how that guy can succeed somehow in the big leagues. I'd give him a lot of time in AAA next year regardless, but it's good to have even more options, especially with Lovelady out for the year next year now.
The fact that your guys are mentioning Quintana and Morales is excellent. Many may not remember Quintana was a sub 4 era pitcher for many good years with the White Sox. For as disappointed I've been in Lynch, Kowar, Singer, (Bubic may just be who he is...which is serviceable)......the fact that we are talking about the #7 option as maybe being a Quintana has me excited. I know there is no such thing as a pitching prospect....but someone out of these 9 is going to figure out how to be an above average pitcher in the Majors right David!
