Salvy's "23rd home run of the season that either tied the game or gave the Royals the lead." THAT is just a ridiculous stat. His clutchness (what? It should be a word) this year has been absurd. Really appreciate Soler's big year, but would love to see Salvy beat it because, well, he's Salvy.

I too got the impression that the GM change was not Dayton's idea. Sherman may feel we are more or less on the right track, but a change is needed.

Oh, and every time we have a comeback against the A's, like last night, how many of their fans shudder and relive that 2014 playoff game?

Yeah, I'm with you. I'd much rather Salvy be the single season leader for awhile than Soler. The dude is unreal.

"for awhile"....nice...

For at least a year until Bobby Witt, Jr. sets the record.

I'm not worried about Dayton stopping JJ from doing the job. Neither is Flanny, who said as much on The Drive yesterday. That's just not how he operates as a leader.

I agree that he's a good leader and likely won't stop JJ from doing anything, so maybe I worded it poorly. I do think he'll be in the way, though, which might stop JJ from doing something he otherwise might without Dayton over his shoulder. I just think that having Dayton in the organization with a new GM might hamper JJ before the decision is even made. And, this probably means absolutely nothing, but I'd rather if a change was to be made that it gives the new person actual control and the ability to be the face of the organization. It may turn out that Dayton really does move behind the scenes a lot more and lets JJ be that face, but I think it'll be hard with him still there. Ultimately, I'm really excited for the Picollo GM era, so hopefully all my fears are way off base and my optimism is dead on.

In the corporate world you sometimes force someone out by promoting them, or in the legal world you make them an "emeritus" or in the university world an "honorary." That sounds like what Sherman is wisely doing with Dayton, though, by his somewhat conflicting statements, Dayton does not fully realize it yet. Hopefully, Sherman will give J.J. the authority he needs and deserves to be a true GM. Dayton had his good and bad points and, as his understudy, especially if he really is the one who deserves the credit for modernizing the hitting and pitching development systems, then we may have our next "we have to get Mahomes" Brett Veach Jr. leader on our hands, which could be quite exciting.

I hope you're right about JJ. I'm optimistic and excited to see how it unfolds.

I think (and hope) that DM is given the task of the big picture stuff and actual organizational leadership (which he is actually quite excellent at), while JJ will get the more detail-oriented stuff. Like DM may have the grand vision "we need a big acquisition to get over the hump into contention" but it will be up to JJ to actually do the legwork and find those pieces, with input and final approval from DM.
