So this isn’t fair…because they have graduated Massey, Witt, and while I’m not as high on Waters as a lot of other people I do see the intrigue and like what he did last year. But the amount of 1B/OF and C/IB players that get talked about in this organization is amazing to me. Tresh and Porter by themselves are interesting. I’m intrigued….but what exactly are the Royals going to do with them? Porter is going to be 28 this year….so the org has to think he is just organizational depth at this point. I really don’t get the Beaty signing to be honest. Its a minor league deal and someone has to play 1b in Omaha…i get it. But if he is making the team and playing quite a bit…something has gone wrong. Its not that hard to put someone at first base (Dozier if necessary) when Vinny and Pratto should be taking up that spot the whole year. Kuddos to the front office for finding the C and 1B depth guys…but we have to get on to some other positions too! I do think it is interesting the Lacy wasn’t on the list of invites.
If you had to grade the front office so far….at this point in time for this offseason what would you give them. Yes, plenty of time to change the grade. To me they started off with an A….and have slowly been sliding down the scale to a D right now. Lol. I just don’t understand this roster construction.
I think when you read a non-roster invite list, catchers are going to stand out because they need a bunch of catchers. Take a look at the MLB Pipeline Royals list. The first catcher is ranked 13th (Carter Jensen). Tresh is 15th and he's interesting. Then it's Hayden Dunhurst at 29. The 1B/OF types, they have Cross likely in a corner and Gentry definitely there. I just don't think there are that many of them. Every team bring in guys like Beaty to spring training. It's really not that big of a deal at all.
If I had to grade the front office, I'd say they're C+/B-. But that's because I think they're smart to have recognized that this team isn't going to compete due to past mistakes and they need to evaluate their guys this year. As I've said roughly 10,000 times, if this is the type of offseason they have next year, I will not be on board.
I know the plan, and it doesn’t matter I’m just a fan that chooses to spend my time on it. But the whole evaluating thing….kinda irritates me. They replaced one guy in the front office. They SHOULD KNOW exactly what they think these guys are going to be yet. Quantaro and Sweeney, yes, they need to evaluate but that’s mainly big league level. There really aren’t that many spots that need to be evaluated in the lineup. There really aren’t that many spots that need to be evaluated in the bullpen. You’ve got your three main guys I feel like and then the back end of the bullpen gets figured out on every team during the season. “Evaluating” really just means not going to compete. But I was hoping for more movement on guys you don’t believe in if we’ve already bailed on 23 show me you are working on 24. Maybe it will still come, but was hoping with Quantaro we’d see more movement. You hear anymore on any internal struggle with the roster management?
Poor Lesky, listening to my complaints on the royals on a Friday morning. Where have you gone wrong in this world? As far as the struggle piece…..I struggle with the knowing Sherman talked about roster churn…..some of the comments you made and then JJ (knowing his boss was just fired) not really turning the backed end of the roster over. There is still a disconnect I can’t get over yet. It would probably help for JJ to be a little more decisive on some of this stuff. Just say Melendez will be the left fielder to start. Pratto WILL be at first, etc. I do appreciate the saying Witt will be the SS. At least you have a plan there and see what happens with the defense.
I think we all need to focus a lot less on what is said between November and March and worry about what's done. They said O'Hearn was going to get more plate appearances than last year. He's now been DFA'd twice.
I'd have liked to have seen more movement via trade (Mondesi, Pratto, MAT). The jury is still out on a lot of these guys like Waters, Eaton, Isbell, Zerpa, Bowlan, Melendez OF defense, Bubic, Lynch, Garcia, Gentry, Olivares. Another similar winning percentage followed by another quiet off-season definitely indicates a lack of willingness to spend to win.
We go around and around on this all the time, but the career plate appearances for eight of the guys who are competing on the roster are:
632
534
386
361
298
194
122
109
That's Witt, Melendez, Olivares, Isbel, Pasquantino, Massey, Eaton and Waters.
I think it's more than reasonable that they want to see what these guys can do with different leadership and given that only two of them even have enough career plate appearances to qualify for a batting title in a season. I just don't think it's especially absurd or unrealistic to take this season to really take stock of what you have given that there are very few combinations of player acquisition that would turn this team into a contender.
It will be interesting to see what go's on with Mondesi in spring training. It really doesn't do anything for the future of the Royals if they play him anymore. Trading him for something is probably the only thing that can. Of coarse, who in there right mind would trade anything of value for him. I expect they will play him enough this spring to show he is healthy, if he is. However with his injury history, Who would?
None of this is his fault. He tried to play as hard and as good as he could. In my opinion the Royals rushed him and put too high of expectation on him before he was ready. Trying to live up to those expectations could be the reason for at least some of those injuries.
I believe the Royals take the majority of the blame for Mondesi. He should have never been up in 2016 and 2017, let alone in the World Series in 2015. Do the injury issues change from a change in that? I don't know, but I believe his development was stunted quite a bit. The whole situation stinks for everyone involved, but the Royals have themselves to blame for a lot of it.
I am in agreement with you on Mondesi; while i don't think we should give him away, I think he's a case where a change of scenery would be beneficial for both parties. If Boston is interested, let's talk to them.
I'm also in agreement with you regarding the NRI pitchers, though the position guys are more of a mystery to me.
I'm behind on pitching commentary. But I am wondering how you feel about Dylan Bundy. The Twins declined his $11M option - no shock there. I don't know if he is completely out of their plans or not in terms of intention to re-sign. But he's a guy I find interesting - he has been capable of providing solid if unspectacular regular innings, and while his control has fluctuated as he has pitched more, his numbers are still good there. He has been victimized by the longball, and I don't know if pitching half his games in KC would help that or not. Given that we don't have an indication of what is happening with Greinke this year, should the Royals consider looking into a guy like Bundy to add to the rotation?
In my opinion, I'd rather see some of the young pitching than Bundy. In his career, he's been good precisely once and average a couple other times. I just don't see a need to add even more mediocrity.

To clarify, I meant another season of losing in 2023 and then another quiet off-season (next offseason)will indicate...
Yep, figured that. I think we're on the same page here.

Mondesi has tools, but he cant seem to stay on the job site
