I don't know if I'd agree with that. There's certainly a case for all of them, and maybe more go, but I wanted to look at who is most likely to get moved in one way or another.
Lesky, listened to you and Petro on your spot yesterday from earlier in the week. (Petro seemed grouchy, lol). But when you brought up Olivares in the article today it reminded me of that convo. Are you getting any impression they are done with Olivares and MJ in the outfield after this year? I think they statement that stood out to me the most is “when do they really start following the rays model” of best defense on the field. Which is kind of what I’m hoping for now going into next year if that is Isbel, Waters, and some left fielder (shoot, I’d take a platoon with MJ and Velasquez…but that doesn’t help the defense really so IDK). Do you get the impression they are going to go full defense and figure out the offense later going into next year?
Also, I know it’s hard, but people really got to get over not trading people. Singer has to have a good few starts here to at least provide the FO the option of trading him. You have to get more assets for him, they just have too. They need more assets and if you aren’t going to sign them, then it’s trade and draft. And the draft hasn’t exactly been a boom for them historically. It needs to be done. Let’s just say after the deadline, I have more faith in this FO finding guys via trade than I do their FA signings or historical drafts. Lol.
Long winded comment, but. Really good article on royals review the other day about the longevity of the front office. Have you heard, are you getting the impression, do you expect them to make some pretty big changes this offseason? Petro will go to his grave this isn’t this FO’s fault…everyone has their opinions which is totally fine. The reality is always somewhere in the middle right. Just really want this “evaluation year” that is now turning into “evaluation years” to be on everything within the organization. I expect there to be pretty big changes this offseason. Firing and hiring within that group. Do you? For someone who has some sources, if that what you hear?
I think sending down Olivares tells me they're done with him. He has use for some team and maybe that team could be the Royals in a few years, but that isn't now. I don't know about about MJ, though. Multiple things can be true. He's athletic enough to be at least an average outfielder. He also has been a terrible outfielder. But he also has never been only an outfielder for an offseason. And you know, for all the talk of being the Rays defensively, they're below average by DRS at four positions, including center field. They were negative at four positions last year too. I feel like everyone has this idea that the Rays are running out these athletes that catch everything at every spot, but there are holes there too.
I get the impression there will be front office additions, but I don't know if there will be a lot of subtractions. That doesn't mean there won't, it just means I haven't heard anything of that sort. This time last year, I was pretty sure DM was getting fired. I haven't gotten any of that this year. But I will continue to harp that things are being run very differently. Everyone I talk to tells me it feels like things have changed quite a bit. I think they did a nice job at the deadline, so I'm curious to see how they approach the offseason. All that said, I wonder if any of the additions they make will be with an eye on being replacements if things don't get better next year.
Very interesting on the Rays. I’m just basing that perception clearly. Didn’t realize they weren’t very good the last couple of years with that.
And this is coming from a fan and I’m not wishing on unemployment for anyone. But someone has to fall on the sword this offseason for an 110 loss team. Everyone has been there since at least 2015 based on that article and most earlier. We’ll see what happens. Don’t love hearing that but it is what it is.
Actually do you think the hitting coaches could get replaced going into next year. They were the bright spot last year it seemed like. I don’t personally think its that big a deal, but with the group being in the bottom of the league in most hitting categories, including walks, I wonder if instead of some FO moves they replace some coaches on that level.
And by FO subtractions I don’t mean JJ. I think JJ stays around yet for a few years. I’m talking lower down the chain. But those things might be kept under wraps until they happen.
I could see a change in hitting coach given that Quatraro is very big on swing decisions and the team struggles some with that. I wouldn't anticipate Zumwalt leaving the organization but maybe going back to the development role. Plus, I wonder a little if there was a handshake deal to not take any more Rays coaches and he can go back to some guys he knows after this season. You see that a lot with coaches hired to be managers.
I haven't heard anything on this front, but it also wouldn't surprise me if some guys decide to leave and the Royals don't try very hard to stop them. Maybe they liked working for Dayton, thought it would be the same and then when it wasn't, they decided to go to another organization. Hell, if Dayton does end up in Chicago, you might see some guys leave to work with him again. He's very well liked by his employees.
I think most teams have some defensive holes. It's just hard to have nine plus defenders. Even the 2015 Royals had two spots with negative defenders by DRS, which of course isn't the be all, end all either.
It took me a long time but I am finally okay with them trading Singer. I feel like at this point we have a good idea what he is, and he is a lot more valuable as a #4 starter for a contender than as the Royals' #2 in another non-competitive season, so I think the return should be pretty good compared to what we gain from keeping him.
You don’t really want to trade good players if you don’t have too. But man, the drafting has to get so much better so that if the right deal comes along they can without much hesitation in stead of ever feeling like they “have” to do something. I don’t think they have to trade Singer and would only for the right deal. But sometimes if feels like they have to yet to keep getting talent flow in. Maybe it just feels that way because the record is so bad yet IDK, but Garcia and Fermin have come up and big productive so it’s not like they’ve had talent come up and help. Don’t really know what I’m saying with that one besides it feels like one step forward, two steps back kind of thing this year.
Here’s a better way of saying it…lol….Garcia, Fermin, Ragans (lately) have all come up and been added talent this year. Legit talent. Why does it still seem so far away? Lol.
Part of it is that your two best bats have been anything but. Pasquantino was looking great before he was hurt and then ultimately done for the year, but Salvy hasn't had a good year. They were counting on those two in the middle. Witt's obviously picked up a lot of the slack, but nobody else really has and that's made it tough. I just think we're really underestimating the Vinnie impact on the offense. Like the other day when Witt was intentionally walked, that doesn't happen with Pasquantino behind him. They obviously have a lot of ground to cover, but losing your best hitter and getting way less than expected from your best power hitter really hurts things.
And on the pitching side, the gains haven't really made it to the big leagues yet. A lot of them are in the lower levels becuase the upper level cupboards were so bare. So we don't even know if that'll work, which leads to the unknown. So that's why it seems so far away. Those things can turn fast. They may or may not, but they can.
I don’t know that I’m as high on Garcia as a lot of people. But he’s been a useful player to come up from your system and help a big league club. You’d take that every year. Shoot it’s basically what I hope Loftin can do. I’d lean towards trading him this offseason if the right deal was to be had. And everyone would say “you just want to trade everyone” lol. No, but if you can get two good players for one…..you have to be right…but we need more talent.
I'm not nearly as high on Garcia as some. Part of that is recency bias because he's been downright bad lately. I see a guy who hits the ball hard, so with the right work could become an offensive force, but I agree that if the Marlins come calling and offer something worthwhile, take it and plug Loftin in there or sign a stopgap while Cayden Wallace finishes cooking.
I actually don’t want your opinion from a Royals perspective. But Nolan Schanuel for the Angels. I’ve been keeping an eye on him because he was the quickest player to the majors. Angels are a freakin train wreck. Super small sample size but it certainly looks like that guy is a usable player already a few weeks after the draft. Where I’m going with this is….are we going to start seeing more of this super fast callups? To me, someone is that ready, do not all teams see that? Or they just wanted more upside? Or nobody has just really thrown them into the fire that quick but the Angels were desperate. Even if he doesn’t have a super high ceiling. A known MLB player a few weeks after draft seems like an immediate help for most teams. It’s just an interesting route more than anything.
I wonder with Singer, is this just what Singer is going to be. Flashes of great, but mostly average. I hoped that a full season with a different pitching staff we would see consistency. We see what they did with Chapman, Ragans, etc. which makes me think why not Singer. And I understand these examples are all very different pitchers & Ragans is a small sample size.
Is it that Singer maybe has to unlearn a few things the old pitching staff trained him to do? Welcome your thoughts, as always!
I don’t see Vazquez on that list why would they keep him
There isn’t a Vazquez on the roster, so I guess it’s already done.
It’s at the point where the Royals should DFA everyone on your list. Sigh.
I don't know if I'd agree with that. There's certainly a case for all of them, and maybe more go, but I wanted to look at who is most likely to get moved in one way or another.

Why wouldn’t Dayton’s old employees want to wok for him again? No expectations, no accountability. Just prayer meeting attendance.

Yeah I think the important thing is they’re not trading him just to dump him. If the deal isn’t there, so be it.

I didn’t see Velazquez listed in any of their transactions. DH, Wed evening
Oh Velazquez. Yeah, he’s not going anywhere, nor should he. He has legit power that they don’t have from other sources.
