With a few seasons of the team under performing, I see no reason why Matheny and staff should be brought back. It's time to move in someone new. Both the Cardinals and Royals know what Matheny brings to the table and it's nothing to make one believe he can take a floundering, young team like the Royals to the next level. Maybe he and Cal can move on together, hopefully to some team in the division.
Everything I’ve heard is that they’re almost definitely both gone and likely everyone on the coaching staff outside of the hitting crew and maybe Grifol. The announcement may not come until next week, but there’s really no need to push for it because it’s like 99.9999999% happening.
Change the entire staff, Wilson at 3rd might as well have his back to the field, he doesn’t have a clue, Carter never has pitchers ready to enter a game, Morin must not know what strategy is if he does Matheny, Eldred and Zumwalt must not pay attention to him, all in all it’s a total cluster ====. It’s a shame with all this young talent they have to be managed and coached so poorly.
At this point, the Royals will be running bodies out there for one last look. Once a new GM is put in place, I expect a lot of changes. Manager, Coaches, and others. Not all at once but I think we will see a much different group running and playing for the Royals this time next year.
The fact that John cleared out baseball management space, and didn't promote from within right away, tells me he is looking at people outside the organization to take over. Something that is long overdue in my opinion.
There won’t be a new GM. They’ll bring on people in the front office but JJ is in charge. I keep saying it, but I’ll say it again. They are cleaning house. The hitting coaches will remain. Grifol might. The rest are as good as gone.
After I sent my question, I wondered who, and the possibilities are Singer, Kowar, and Lynch. Maybe Bubic. All could reasonably assume that they'd be better served in an organization that knows how to develop pitchers--as the Athletic article suggested. But, perhaps, with a housecleaning, the Royals could become such an organization?
Why are people looking for Matheny to get fired during this last week? I think they are cleaning house at this point as well but I’d be shocked if they fire him with a few games left in the season. I guess they could do what happened to Mattingly and announce he isn’t coming back next year but let him coach out the season. Maybe that’s what people are saying. I just don’t see the point in firing a guy with a few games left. Just wait until the first day of the offseason. Is that what people are saying? Announce he isn’t coming back but let him manage the rest of the season?
That's what I would guess happens if it does happen before Wednesday. There's pretty much no point to actually fire the guy now, but if they make the decision and he chooses not to finish the year (I think he'd finish the year), that could make a move happen.
I have so enjoyed your articles all season, David. Look forward to your off season articles already. I have a manager candidate in mind, but will wait until your list comes out. It should be an interesting off season.
Not exactly related to your article but question regardless. Why does everyone see Amir Garret coming back? I know he has been ok lately….but he walks everyone. Its almost like Brentz from last year. Everyone excuses the walks if he is putting up good numbers…..but at the end of the year the numbers aren’t that good because the walks hurt over the course of the season. Its so counter intuitive to preach strikes…and then keep Garrett on the roster. Surely, you can find a Loogy somewhere else to cover this role. How do you set a ton that strikes are important going into next year and keep a guy that walks 6.5/9? Which…is up from 5.5/9 last year.
I’m not sure that anyone is convinced he’s on the roster next year. I think there’s a chance because he has experience and has figured out the control issues before but I wouldn’t say anyone believes it’s a foregone conclusion he’s back. The truth is we have no real clue how this off-season is going to look at any stage.

Keep up the good work, always enjoy reading.

David, I have been reading these all year. I greatly appreciate your writing them. You're the best!
Oh thank you so much! I appreciate you reading and commenting!
Any unexpected bombshells? Like someone requesting a trade?
I would doubt it. The only players good enough to request a trade and have us care are rookies, Salvy and Brady Singer.

They could become that. I just don’t think there’s much to gain from demanding a trade at this stage of any of their careers.

Ooh I’ll be curious to see if he’s on my list!

I came to write "Hello darkness, my old friend" but our host beat me to it!
It's been a year.
