3 series wins in a row! Another game that highlights the fact that there are pieces in this team to build around.

I wonder if they'll try to shift McArthur back to the starter's role with his addition of a 4th pitch. Sending him to the pen made sense this year to get him up to the majors and to fill one of the many holes there, but a guy throwing 4 pitches really doesn't fit the typical mold for a closer/high leverage guy.

I suppose they could see what McArthur can do stretched out, but I'm not sure they'll give him that shot. A lot of what I heard from scouts when the Royals picked him up was that it just wasn't going to work as a starter, but I suppose with a new slider maybe things are different.

Good to see some promise out of the bullpen. Hopefully fewer new arms needed for next year.

Yeah, I'm just excited about this team. The fact that these Royals could win with a 1-run lead, that just made me cheer long and loud! I'm wondering if McArthur might stretch into a starter, or a long/bulk reliever.

It was stressful, but fun for once! Yeah, I just responded to Tracey about him as a starter. I suppose it's possible. I don't know that I'd expect it, but they could.

IDK, kinda think you let the guy have some sustained success before moving him to a rotation/bulk innings guy. Think the organization just has to let the guy succeed first. If that’s bullpen its bullpen. Put him in the best spot to succeed. Right now that’s bullpen.

I'd like to just say that this season has been a turd sandwich! Good in March and September, but oh what we had in between.

So, this really has nothing to do with McArthur……he’s been a nice surprise here. But just in general, I’m really not all that worried about the bullpen. And yes, that may be written with stupidity but if I’ve seen anything over and over and over again it is that guys will step up find a role in the bullpen. It may only be for a year, it may be for multiple years….but there will be more McArthurs if you keep finding guys with stuff and tweaking them. There will be more Coleman’s as well where you think it should work but doesn’t for whatever reason. I think McArthur is a positive step already for the coaching staff as it is showing it can improve a guy with some adjustments. I understand that I just wrote that and the bullpen has been a dumpster fire since the all-star break…but I think we are starting to find some guys step up and take advantage of an opportunity. Now, that doesn’t mean that necessarily translates into next year but it does make you feel a little better.

Yeah, I tend to agree that a bullpen is something that *can* come together pretty easily. The encouraging thing about McArthur is less about him specifically and more about the fact that they identified him, tweaked his repertoire and have found success. We're seeing that they've tweaked Kowar a bit too and he's found success. If you start to have more of those stories and combine with a couple of nice signings, the bullpen comes together pretty easily.

Nice win last night, McArthur was fun to watch. He feels like the 8th inning guy to me rather than the closer but obviously all depends on whether they pick up a real closer. On this homestand only managed to get out to the K on Sunday, which obviously was not the best timing. But the weather was great.

The weather this week has been freaking incredible. Win or lose, being at the park in this weather is worth it.

Totally agree ...

Wasn’t Wade Davis a starter turned 8th inning guy? edited to add a few woreds I must have forgotten earlier: Ultimately, turning into into our lights out closer!

Not comparing coaching styles from then and now. It’s exciting to see the possibilities!

He was. He was decent with the Rays as a starter, they moved him to the bullpen, the Royals moved him back to the rotation and then the rest was history for him.

Three straight series wins and one series win was against the defending World Series champions! We are also scoring runs much more consistently the past month as well.

I still see a need for 1-2 bats for next year but need to find starters behind Ragans. Was glad to see Singer shut down and he really needs a weightlifting and running program over the winter to increase his endurance!!!

They could definitely use a big bat for the middle of the lineup. Can't argue with that.

I never thought I'd see this team get to a point where they won one-third of their games overall, particularly after they were 29-75, but here were are: they're 51-102. Kudos to Zerpa for cleaning up and finishing this game today. Always good to get a sweep, but Cleveland looks like they're packing it in for the winter. Detroit and the Yankees might, too (probably not Detroit so much).

Houston will be playing hard, because they've got everything on the line, but man, they've been pretty wretched the last couple weeks.

FINALLY! SOME LEGIT CHANGE IN THE FRONT OFFICE!

Have to wonder if a high school catcher with the 8th pick wasn’t really Picollo’s pick after all…….lol

MJ has a 98th Avg Exit Velocity, and a 92nd percentile hard hit percentage. Disappointing season, but I hope he's back for a third year and figures it out for an entire season. Those batted ball stats do give you some hope that me might be a valuable offensive player. He doesn't look as bad as has defensive stats reflect, and even those do show an above average arm.

The metrics have been great all year, but just not enough contact. Now he’s making more and the numbers are showing it. I still wouldn’t be surprised if they see this as the time to move him though.

Yeah, trade him for Cole Ragan's twin. I'm good with that.

Definitely some encouraging signs in the second half, pitching and hitting. Great to see but still holding my breath for more sustained success next year for some of these guys. Looks like the FO moves have started, can't wait to read your opinions on them!

Sometimes baseball fandom is about the feel as much as the stats. And what I know is that when Clarke and Hernandez are in high-leverage situations and something goes wrong, I’m physically nauseated. Because I know they won’t recover in time, if at all. When McArthur came in, I just relaxed all over, despite the fact that it absolutely should have resulted in a blown lead that wasn’t his fault.

And now beloved former Royal Chris Getz gets the last laugh swiping beloved former Royal Brian Bannister right out from under us..Really? As if watching him play 332 games for the Royals wasnt enough..He's relentless!

David, I hope you are writing tomorrow about the new scouting director. As much as it’s a positive I heard the prev scouting director (name escaping me) is getting a promotion….nothing against him…but that dampers things quite a bit for me. Addition is good….but addition with some subtraction is the right combination here in the front office.

Expand full comment

I’ll have something about him. I told you they likely weren’t subtracting but would add. I don’t think it’s a big deal at all as long as they bring in good people and this is bringing in good people.

Just listened to JJ’s conversation with Soren on 810. I mean, nobody is going to get fired. Which means all these guys he’s worked for with for years he’s keeping around. I’m glad they are adding. Love it. There is no accountability. Hate that. They all just stick around. I’m closer to the “anyone else but anyone associated with the Royals the last 8 years” than I was before. A little disheartening today. Oh well, only time will tell.

Anyone who takes a blatant disregard for historical data and takes a high school catcher with the 8th overall pick knowing the track record. When people you have passed on are hitting well in AA already (Shaw, Teel)…or heaven forbid in the majors (Albeit struggling)…..should be gone. But no, YOU GET A PROMOTION, YOU GET A PROMOTION. What is this foolishness??

That’s my rant for today….no need to respond. LOL.

I’ll just say this. For someone who advocates regularly for them zigging when everyone zags, zigging in the draft seems to not be what you wanted.

Expand full comment

The reality is I don’t care if they zig when everyone zags. But you have to be right. They have not been enough times and while it was JJ’s first…it’s the same guys. But I have zero faith in this group zigging….now it just feels like stupidity. It doesn’t help a lot of the guys they passed on have hit the ground running. I’m to the point of Win, then you can zag….until you win…maybe just stick with the consensus and not save a little money.

It’s not really about the draft. It’s about continually half assing things with this organization. You brought in new blood. That’s great, and then you turn around keep everyone around and promote the same guys……in year 8 of a rebuild….when you’ve lost 100 games….with no real prospects of competing next year….with no top 100 prospects. In what other organization does this happen? I keep going back to Sherman. Whatever, it’s not really a huge deal. He will either win and it’s good or they won’t and they will all be gone. It’s just that seems that should only take 3 years seem to take twice as long with this organization with pretty common sense decisions.

I just want them to be .500…….crying…..crying…..sob…..sob…..I know whoever has been there the last 8 years has not won. Give me anyone else. (Wiping away tears). Lol.

Does Ragans pitch today? That will make me feel better.
