We have now seen the 2 rookie starting pitchers debut in 2021 we expected to see in Lynch and Kowar. Who is the next starting pitcher to make their debut? I know some of the names but not sure who is closest.
If you had asked me this in April, my answer would have been Jonathan Bowlan, but obviously he's out until at least mid-season next year. I think it'll be one of Austin Cox, Jon Heasley or Alec Marsh, but Angel Zerpa has a leg up on all of them since he's already on the 40-man, although a couple of the first three will likely be there this off-season too. If pressed, I'd have to say it'll be Cox, but none of them would surprise me.
I also would have said Bowlan. I really like his size to be a work horse in the same vein as Carlos Hernandez size wise. I have no idea how their pitches and velocity match up. The 40 man roster crunch this offseason will have a lot to say about who is next.
I think they'll have room for anyone they want to add, so it's not a true crunch, but yeah. I actually do wonder if Bowlan will end up as a nasty reliever when he comes back, but I guess we'll see.
