I keep seeing what these guys were making before coming to KC and boggling at how much the bad team tax is this year. 15 million for a pretty-ok arm is crazy time. But this is the hole they dug for themselves.
Thank you for putting out such a thorough write up so quickly! This has been a fun week so far with all the rumors and seeing some moves be made, and I really hope you’re right about them maybe going a bit over budget this year.
Also, a quick question: these moves put the 40 man at 42, right? Do you think there might be some sort of trade on the way to clear that log jam, or is it more likely that they just cut two more to make room?
Lugo wasn’t my first target but I’ll take it. Its fine. 3/45….yeah I mean that last year might hurt but that’s just where this team is right now. They need starters and you hope in three years they have other guys up that can take that spot. Love the Stratton deal as well. Give me all of those we can. He’s a competent arm that is better than what they have. If they can get Giolito call it a day. I’m not overly concerned about the bat. Would still like pitching pitching and pitching. My question is Greinke. Saw he wants to come back. But the Royals can’t bring him back as a starter can they? Reliever for one year 5 mil? Sure I’ll take that but as a starter? Just hoping that isn’t the second starter.
I absolutely love the fact that they're doing what we knew they needed to do. So often, the Royals have ignored the obvious moves to save a few bucks. They're acting like a team that wants to win games, which is nice.
Wow that was fast! Thanks for the great article! I do agree with some of the concerns on Lugo, but as you mentioned, he's still learning how to be an effective starter, and has the tools to improve. I actually have some faith in this staff to help him develop a solid 3rd pitch and I'm excited about this signing. I also get the concern on the player option, but in my mind, I don't think he signs with us without it. I'll take it. I just love seeing them aggressively pursuing real, competent, floor raising, veteran MLB baseball talent. Have you heard any rumors on Gurriel? I would much rather add Stroman/Giolito/Marlins starter and another bullpen arm and forgo a bat than overpay for Gurriel. But maybe if we trade Salvy/MJ/Loftin that looks more appealing. Regardless, I am ready for the season to start after today! Keep it rolling JJ!
I love these signings! It continues to squeeze the guys from last year to put up or get cut. I also saw you finally got your wish in Collin Snyder getting cut.
Great news. Not feeling any excitement yet for the season though. I wonder if I will.
Any new season is worth excitement.

Pretty much every estimate for Lugo was $13-$15 million. I think the third year option is the bad team tax here.
The Royals need to get used to paying a bad team tax until, well, they’re no longer a bad team.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of John McMillon in the bullpen mix too!
Yes, 100%. I know they say he’s healthy. I really want to see it.
Very good news. Now one more good starter, a Witt extension, and a trade or two for some young arms/bats, and we’ll have some real excitement!
I don’t think you’ll get your wish on a young bat, but I do think they’ll add a bat still so that’ll be good. I do think everything else gets done.

I would bet on two cuts over a trade, but you never know what some team might offer.
I wouldn’t want to be Castillo or Heasley right now…
We’ll see.
They are definitely the two most likely in my mind.

NM, just saw your reply on the last article!
Great info. Thanks, David.
Thanks for the surprise afternoon post.
