The KC Royals haven't had a decent rotation in over 30 years. I do think there is one in the collection of arms we have to choose from. Who is in that rotation remains to be seen. I really was not all that bothered by the troubles the young arms had last year. It takes most pitchers a year or two to adjust, and most of the arms had times when they looked like world beaters. However, I saw a lot of over throwing by this group. Keller also seemed to have this same problem most of the first half of the season.
As this young group settles in, I suspect we will see results similar to what they have shown in the minors. Singer, Lynch, Hernandez and Bubic will get the first crack at landing in the rotation. Kowar, Lacy, Zerpa, Marsh and others will probably get their chance as the year go's on.
So far, I really like the chances of Hernandez, Bubic, and Lynch winning a regular spot on that rotation. The competition will be fun to watch!
I don't think that's accurate. The 2013 team had the fourth most innings from starters and was middle of the pack in run prevention. That's pretty decent. The 2014 team was eighth innings and tied for 10th in ERA. It hasn't been much, but they have had a couple solid rotations at least in the recent past.
But I agree. I'm excited to see what a lot of these guys can do with their footing under them. It's easy to look at 2021 as year two for Bubic and Singer specifically, but was year one really a full year? I was hard on Singer saying that he should have had more figured out, but he also only got 12 starts in a 60-game season. Maybe that was unfair.
It’s not unfair that Singer should have more figured out. That’s not to say he still can’t be good, or figure things out. I just think the more we’ve seen him without adjustments on his end the lower his ceiling goes. To me….on what they are most likely to be…..Hernandez and Lynch have passed him. Singer can still be a valuable starter…..but when we look for who can possibly lead this rotation or be the #2…..I don’t reasonably look to Singer anymore for that. I hope he proves me wrong.
I know you mention it weekly. But I can’t be the only one getting frustrated with the owners and players now right? You’ve had all offseason. Get it figured out fellas. We are now to the point that people will get back around to baseball and the negative press will continue.
I just think that he didn't really have a full season, so to say he's had two big league seasons is disingenuous. I still think he should have made more adjustments to this point.
I'm frustrated with the talks, but I'm not frustrated with the players. The owners locked them out and said it was to speed up talks. Then they sat silently for 43 days. Then after the players stepped up (when it was the owners turn, truly), the owners took a week to respond. They negotiated a bit and the players made a proposal a few days ago. The owners committed to a response and then decided not to and tried to call in mediation. That's not what mediation is for, no matter what the owners are trying to put out there to win the PR game. The players are negotiating in good faith, the owners absolutely are not. I'm frustrated, but not at the players in any way. There needs to be some middle ground to meet at and the owners are hanging out at Denny's instead of driving half a mile to meet them.
I'm not frustrated with the players. I agree the owners aren't actually negotiating. I'm more frustrated with the belief now that this will eat into games. We aren't there yet.....but we are getting close now. its a self inflicted wound for baseball if that happens.
No mention of the NRIs that were recently signed? I think there is a 50/50 chance that one of those guys makes the Opening Day roster - Sam Freeman, Arodys Vizcaino, Colten Brewer. I think the Taylor Clarke signing was for depth. They wanted a multi-inning reliever who had options. I think Taylor opens in Omaha.
I agree on the 4 locks and Coleman, who doesn't have anything left to prove in the minors. That is 5 of 8 spots. I like Bolanos to make the team too for the reasons you mentioned, his time is now as there are a lot of relievers coming up in the system and the Royals need to see if this guy is a keeper or not. The last two spots go to a lefty - either Freeman or Speier with Tillo a dark horse, and a multi-inning guy. My guess is that last spot goes to Carlos Hernandez. The rotation will be Minor-Singer-Lynch-Keller-Bubic. If Vizcaino shows he is healthy and looking like the guy who was the Braves closer, then Coleman (due to his options) gets sent down to start the year.
