Zuber is definitely on the outside now- he got optioned to Omaha last evening which was somewhat surprising given Staumont's status.
Brach won't be released based on yesterday, but boy is he under some pressure now. Another bad outing or definitely several in a row will be enough.
I hadn't been impressed with Wade Davis, although he hadn't given up any runs yet, but I thought he actually looked good last night. I wish they had radar guns in spring training telecasts.... Hud said he was throwing 95 but Hud is Hud.
Good take on Bubic vs Junis. For whatever reason, I'm ok with Singer especially getting close to 150 IP but not so much with Bubic. Heck Singer threw 127 innings as a 20 year old at UF after only pitching 43 his freshman season. Matheny talked around the IP issue this season last night during the game. To me, he was hinting at guys like Keller, Minor, and Duffy having to be they guys to pick up the bulk of the innings, despite last year's shortened season. I still think they should go with 6 starters after the first month or so.
Carlos Hernandez seems to have a real gift for giving up the long ball.
Jesse Hahn may be their best reliever on the staff right now.
Of course, the ONLY thing that matters is that Dayton Moore said he's open to keeping the Kid on the opening day roster. :)
Haha, good work getting this over here! One other thing on Zuber. I had written most of this before he was optioned, and I think that probably spells the end of him on the OD roster, but also there are enough questions that I left him in because he *could* find his way back.
Thanks! Wouldn't want any of your informed readers to miss out on my stellar takes.... Agree regarding Zuber. Reading Staumont's comments, I really don't expect him to be ready opening day. The 26th spot on the roster on Opening Day doesn't matter much. It either goes to a bullpen guy that won't pitch much or a reserve that won't play much until after the first few weeks when there aren't so many off days. If Witt is the starting 2B, there is nobody in the lineup to PH for, and bench players will only play to give starters a regular day off... and yesterday's comment by Dayton Moore was an odd one to make if they weren't basically planning to keep him up.
I thought that comment was odd as well. And super out of character.
I really don't know what to think about Staumont. He has been pitching on the back fields for about a week and a half, so his game debut date might not mean that much, but also, it sounds like he was hit pretty hard. I'd be surprised at this point if he's ready to go, but it's one of those things that we just have no way of knowing. Which I don't like!
But even with the sample, it's so hit or miss on who is hit hard and who isn't. It's going to be a mystery, I think, for a long time. Look at the Royals alone. Salvy and Keller both had it and had great years. Dozier had it and struggled. Freddie Freeman had it and won MVP!
True. And its probably not accurate to say the sample is large enough. There were enough players who had it, in that sense, but a 60 game season and all of the weirdness surrounding the season are enough to cast doubt on anyone's performance last year. You would really need to know a lot of details on the level of sickness, and have a longer season.

It would be an interesting thing to research... the after effects of Covid on player performance. There is a pretty good sample size unfortunately.
