I’m glad the Royals appear to be going with someone who hasn’t been a manager before. Honestly, whoever they pick doesn’t sway me that much. I want to see who the pitching coach is and how they are reworking the pitching side of things over the manager. I think they would really have to lay an egg and pick someone so out there to really mess this up on the managerial search. You ever hear anything about Carlos Beltran as manager anywhere? I do wish he’d have gotten his shot.

I haven't heard a word about Beltran, which stinks. Like I wrote in the candidates article, I think he got an especially raw deal. All the players got off with no punishment, but because he was retired, he lost the job he had before he got to even really start it. I think I'd be a very good manager, but I guess more time has to pass for some reason.

I like quatraro just because he come from an organization that's always in it with a low payroll. They know how to get the most out of their players. I like McCullough because the dodgers also know how to win albeit they do it with money. I still think he's a winner. I don't want wathan for one reason. He's father was a popular player and coach here so he's going to be the popular choice. I think the royals need to stay away from sentimentality on this choice. From some completely new blood in for this hire. Same for the coaches. Let the new guy pick who he thinks is best with the exception of maybe the pitching coach. They need to go for the best available

The more I've read, the more McCullough is interesting to me, along with Quatraro and Wathan (any of the three could bring some freshness to the pitching coach position) Curious... from the Rays angle, has anything been said about Linares (for any position) this offseason?

I haven't heard anything about him at all. When I was writing the candidates article, I asked multiple people about him and they all said he's probably not a candidate anywhere yet, so I left him off. But the resume is incredibly impressive. My guess is he's a bench coach in Tampa if Quatraro goes, but the number of great Astros players who came through with him is crazy. I'd guess he's probably a hot name next year.

I like Quatraro because of his experience with the Rays and their payroll. Might help to poach some minor league managers and coaches from the same organization. GMDM tried to transplant Atlanta to KC and it worked for a few years but the Rays are a better model for KC.

Like you, when I first saw Wathan's name being mentioned, I thought it was just lazy speculation because of his (and his dad's) past ties to the franchise. After I started learning more about him, I now think he's the clear favorite to get the job. It just makes too much sense - he's too good (on top of the natural familial fit) - and the fact that the Phils are in the World Series makes it even more likely.

I don't know if it necessarily makes it more likely, but I think it definitely makes the move a little more popular. That shouldn't mean much of anything, but it probably does.

Now that Dusty Wathan's off the board, my money is on Clayton McCullough. Folks around the Dodgers' organization sure think he's leaving for the Royals. I think we'll know soon.
