I think we have to move a catcher either now or this off season. Gallagher hit well enough in limited action last year to dream he could be a long term answer for a catching deprived team. Villoria and Rivero seem like adequate back ups to Salvy that just need more experience. Melendez needs promoted to AAA badly. I would love to see that happen in short order so he can advance with Witt and Prato. The Royals have a position of strength and need to find a trade partner or we risk losing one or more of these quality catchers to the 40 man roster crunch coming this off season.
I don't think it's a huge deal if he doesn't get to AAA this year, but yeah, I'd like to see him get up there with the other two. A trade of Cam would make a lot of sense.
Witt and Pratto will not be blocked when they come to the majors, but what about Melendez? Unless Salvy gets injured or moves to DH, would you really want MJ or be a back up? I am not sure that is best for him or the Royals. And yet it seems he could be part of the next core. The kind of problems you like to have but still, unless Salvy gets injured, how and when do you solve it? Could it be, at some point, perhaps after next year if it really looks like MJ is ready, that we let Salvy go to another team for him to win a World Series, and get a key piece or two back for him so we can win one too?
I think you'll see a little more of a split for Salvy being out from behind the plate eventually, which, well I hope he keeps hitting for this kind of power. But there are definitely questions about that. I would bet there will be more of a revolving DH after Santana either leaves as a free agent or is traded and you might see some combination of Salvy, MJ, Dozier, etc. there. Of course, Melendez could be a piece in a trade that helps to round out the roster. That wouldn't surprise me either.
I like your take. I think Cam could make sense for some teams that aren't in the playoff hunt right now. He has shown the last few years that he can handle regular duty and puts up better numbers when he has it. The question is whether anyone will offer enough for K.C. to trade him. The same can be said for everyone though. I saw a piece in the Athletic about the Giants. The writer mentioned Kyle Zimmer, but that was before his recent struggles.

People I've talked to just don't seem to think there's a ton of interest in Zimmer, but all it takes is one team, so maybe.
