Nice to see some wins. Hernandez….man. Feels like he’s about to be sent down. If he gets sent down, Bubic just got sent down, Singer already did this year. Is anything more damning to the pitching coach? Lynch has looked pretty good. Any maybe if we say you were only going to get one good starter out of that group so maybe its normal IDK. But no progress is being made with any of that 18 pitching class but Lynch. Pitching in Colorado has been tough but I’ve been a little disappointed in the staff overall actually. The numbers aren’t great. I thought the pitching would be better than the offense and we’ve had some bright spots but I think they are high 20’s in staff ERA now as well. My fear is that winning 2 out of 3 will make them hold on any coaching changes. You still made it seem like you see it happening.
I'll start with the coaching changes. Unless they drastically turn things around, they'll be at the 40-game mark (Dayton's magical marker) at the end of this homestand. The White Sox are struggling but good. The Twins are not struggling and seem pretty good. I don't know how you can expect anything better than *maybe* four wins? If they go 4-4, they're 16-24 at the 40-game mark. If they go 3-5, well, you know the math. I just think it's a matter of time before they flail again.
And yeah, the pitching. It sucks, but also maybe it's for the best. I didn't want to say it, but losing yesterday may have been for the best too because sometimes it takes a jarring defeat to make changes. Not that I'm unhappy with a win, but long term, maybe not the best thing? So with the pitching, if they're all struggling, at some point, you have to pinpoint an issue. I'm watching Jackson Kowar VERY carefully. They reworked him and that's part of why he was struggling so badly to start in the minors. He had a great start this weekend. If that keeps up and it took going to a different pitching coach to make it happen, maybe that pushes a big change.
I wonder a little if Cal not being with the team right now (don't know why) is playing a part in that. If they had simply promoted DeRenne or Mabry or something, then I wouldn't be thinking that, but a big change like they made has me at least somewhat hopeful that Cal won't make it the week either.
Appreciate the Taylor love. It's been great seeing his professional approach and the 2-hole spot definitely seemed well-earned.
What are your thoughts on his trade value? His performance so far has to be helping a great deal with it and actually seems like the one example where playing a vet without a long-term future in the org has paid off.
Yeah, I've been pleasantly surprised with him offensively this year. I would think a number of teams would be interested in him. The price is cheap, especially for a big market team, and he's proven to be a legitimately excellent defender. A team like the Phillies would love to have a defensive replacement. The Yankees, Padres and Giants would also make sense.
I'm going to get started on a trade candidates article to run after an off day, but they just haven't had any! But he'll be in there for sure.
David I surprised that you did not comment on Dozier's real dumb attempt at stealing 3rd base. We know that he does not have front runner speed. It is this type of play that just drives me crazy. I doubt MM called the play, but I may be wrong. Lastly, no reporter asked him about the play.
If I wasn't writing about the games as part of a bigger piece, I'd have focused on it because it was terrible. I don't know if that's Dozier or if that's Wilson or if that's Matheny, but whoever made the decision made a bad one. Dozier is a lot faster than people give him credit for, but he's also only fast when he gets going. He doesn't gear up like BWJ or Mondesi or even Merrifield, so he shouldn't be stealing in that situation. Ever.
Hallefreakingllujah! My YEARS of complaining, I'm sure, had nothing to do with it but TB is gone! This is right up there with Aug 2, 1973, Oct 27, 1985 and Nov 1, 2015 as the most important dates in Franchise history!
I am 100% shocked - someone in KC management was held accountable??? Time to play the Lotto! If I am dreaming, please do NOT wake me!

They made a move and fired the hitting coach…….which…..is at least something I guess. But I wanted to see the pitching coach fired too. LOL

WE WON A BASEBALL GAME!!!
WE WON A BASEBALL SERIES!!!
Just a thing I noticed on my daily trip to Baseball Reference: Andrew Benintendi's .796 OPS is good for a 135 (!!!) OPS+
One-thirty-five.
How crazy is that? I always use Angel Berroa in 2003, but he had a .789 OPS and it was good for 101.

That's a lot to put on a hitting coach change. Now if they had dumped Cal too...
Lol lol - I should've given a dripping with sarcasm alert.
Haha, I just knew you were excited!
