So often all teams, but it seems like especially the Royals, come across a situation like the Vinnie injury and go, "Well, let's just see what the backups and minor leaguers can do."
None of these guys are getting paid much, but the fact that Sherman OKed the spending feels like a significant upgrade from Glass. The fact that JJ not only put claims on the two guys but he or his front office did enough work to know Gurriel was out there and potentially an option and got the deal done - and the fact that it was announced after the waiver claims makes me think the Royals were always fine with getting both of those guys - is exciting to me.
JJ, with his work in the offseason and this season, is casting himself as a guy who is never going to sit on his hands but also not a guy who deals just to deal (ala Preller or DiPoto.) However this season ends up, watching the way Q has managed, the coaching staff has coached, and JJ has GMed has me excited for the future of the franchise.
It seems to me the selection of Gurriel, Pham and Grossman reflects very poorly on the Royals ability to evaluate and develop MLB-caliber players. The Front Office is clearly saying they prefer three players of very limited value (maybe they can catch lightning in a bottle with one of them) over Loftin, Gentry, Waters, Pratto, Cross or any of the other Royals' prospects.
Interesting pick-ups to me, I neither like nor dislike them. Yes, Pham had a couple of hits yesterday, but he seemed impressive for the Cardinals and then he wasn't. Definitely tragic for Vinnie and then Lorenzen gets put on the DL as well. The relievers are up and down. I was beginning to like Schreiber in the 8th inning until his performance yesterday. Do the Royals still believe in Erceg as their closer? I'm unhappy with the Royals problems of moving base runners. So enjoy your reviews of the games and the analysis that goes into it. Thank you.
What is the story on Erceg. Is ready to go. The Royals haven't been in any games lately to need to use him. I hope if they have a reason to need him, that he's ready to roll.
I haven't heard any indication that he's anything but fine. The only game they could have used him was Friday in the ninth and I doubt he was available both because of the hand and because of usage the previous two days. I'd assume he'll be out there tonight either way, to be honest.
I don't think we've seen a more ignominious MLB debut than Gentry this year...since CJ Alexander (who was DFA'd). And the silence is deafening on Pratto. At least the Royals are making decisions on talent...and turning the roster in an effort to improve.
I'm optimistic they can "right the ship this week", but they need to get their (relief) pitching mojo back.

It reflects poorly on the Dayton Moore era.
Aka the Lonnie Goldberg era
Good. It shows JJ's not delusional like Dayton was.

Royals need some home cooking to turn this around! Big week for them! GO ROYALS!!!
