Glad you were able to spend the weekend in my part of the world. I live in Cabool, you probably saw that name on the road signs. Looks like we're building up a lot so so outfielders without any star power. MJM might be the closest to that once it is all said and done.
I did see that! Didn't realize you were there, interesting!
Yeah, I mean I don't see a star in the group, but I do agree MJ has the best shot to get there. That's a spot they can absolutely upgrade. This is where the decisions get difficult for them. You can hope to figure out three outfielders from a bunch of guys who aren't stars or you can package solid but unspectacular players to another team who might have a starting pitcher who fits the same bill. The Royals need more of those starting pitchers and some other team probably needs more of those outfielders. This is where being transactional truly comes into play.
I lived in Springfield from 1980-1988 and can attest to that region being deeply red Cardinal territory. So, of course, one of my biggest joys in life was watching the Royals win the World Series in 1985. Almost as satisfying as sweeping the Yankees in 1980!
I was really surprised they didn’t move Olivares as well at the deadline. Even if it is just for cash. It really didn’t make that much sense especially after they picked up the Cubs outfielder. Maybe they were holding to their guns. But if he’s the next guy down, it’s just interesting. Not a big deal, just odd. I’m fine with him going though. Other people were higher on him than me. He has a hit tool, but never enough power to make it really play with the defense provided. It was time to move on for me.
I guess what I’m saying is. I appreciate a decision was made. I don’t know that it was a super tough decision but I like seeing decisions made. It was evaluation year, you evaluated and made a decision. That’s really all I can ask for at this point. Tougher ones are coming, and that’s perfectly fine to me. Means you are making some decisions on guys.
I don’t hate keeping legitimate big league quality depth if the return isn’t enough. Based on what I’d heard, there was enough interest that the return would have been enough for me, but maybe I’m wrong.
Sure wish they would have been able to sign BWJ earlier this year. Guy is a stud, but now it would take a lot more (three digits in front of the M for sure) to get him inked.
I mentioned this the other day in a comment, but the interesting thing about the future potential BWJ contract is that it's now become five or six years or 12 or 13 years. There is a way to give him an eight or nine-year deal done but I'd have a hard time seeing him want to hit free agency at that age. He's either getting out there at 30 or for one last hurrah at 35. They're at an awkward point now. It can still be done, though.
I am a little surprised they haven’t gotten anyone signed. BJW isn’t signing long term is the impression I keep getting….could be reading it wrong. But the one that surprises me is Vinny. If BWJ wants to get to FA then ok, nothing you can really do. But do you believe in Vinny or not? Cause with that background you would think that would work. But if you don’t, ok I guess. Just an interesting strategy to have everyone come up at the same time and then not extend anyone. They still can and have time. But seems like it gets harder and harder with BWJ the longer you go now. You waited, and that’s fine, but now you actually have to pay up. I still think a 40/60 chance this offseason right before the stadium pitch. Probably way too high. But who knows.
I don't know if Witt is signing long-term or not, but I also don't know where you'd get an impression one way or another on it. As for Vinnie, I think there was some concern over his shoulder. They should have a pretty good idea of his recovery this winter to see if they want to go in on him. He's also not a free agent until after 2028 and his profile historically hasn't gotten paid big, so they don't *really* need to make that call just yet.
I only say that because “typically” these long term deals would have been done by now. And with his background being different than a lot of the guys that do it. I don’t know, just reading from a far…every day that goes by makes it harder and in general they would have been done by now. Doesn’t mean can’t happen or anything.
There are dozens of us Royals fans in Springfield! Dozens.
The trade off for the town being so red is that you get to see the Royals AA prospects every year at Hammons Field downtown when NWA comes through. (The Royals affiliate, not the rap group. Although that would be as interesting a show for sure.)
I actually used to go down to Springfield to see NWA (the team) play. It's a fun time. I love minor league baseball and it's a bit closer than heading down to Springdale. I will say that none of the other Royals fans were at Black Sheep Burgers when we were there! At least none I could find.
One would hope. It would be fantastic to get a core group signed - BWJ, Fermin, Vinny, maybe one or two more going forward. Maybe the emotion of it all and playing with his buddies could swing Bobby to sign. ;)
Their development is a big reason why I was hopeful they'd look to the Mariners in their pitching coach search. I'm very pleased with the organizational changes and Sweeney and all that, but I hope they look to Seattle as they continue to build out their pitching development team.

We gotta build that conveyor belt of depth in the minors to produce in the bigs....

I love watching my team win in front of fans of the other team, but it's especially sweet when it's the Cardinals.

It would have taken three digits before the M in the off-season too, if we’re being honest.
well, yeah. In my head I was thinking the length of the contract, a la the Braves. Now it's a four year deal. :)

We even have up-to-code lighting now at Hammons Field.
We're heading to Springdale in a couple of weeks for a couple of games. I have a son that lives down there.
One would hope. It would be fantastic to get a core group signed - BWJ, Fermin, Vinny, maybe one or two more going forward. Maybe the emotion of it all and playing with his buddies could swing Bobby to sign. ;)
I don't know that I'd really worry too much about signing Fermin long-term, but they should work to get a couple locked up if they believe in them.
The mariners are a team that knows how to develop starting pitching....the Royals need to find out what they are doing and replicate it.
Their development is a big reason why I was hopeful they'd look to the Mariners in their pitching coach search. I'm very pleased with the organizational changes and Sweeney and all that, but I hope they look to Seattle as they continue to build out their pitching development team.
