Hey David, You think Matias not being selected in the rule five draft the last couple years is a indication of where other teams view him? I understand there are complications (keeping him on roster, etc) so its not exactly cut and dry. But you could pick him and then work out a deal if Pirates, Rangers, whoever at the bottom of the food chain right now. Makes me just wonder if industry doesn't see it working with him. That said, there are probably 100 of these guys are the game, but people keep talking pretty highly of his power.
It's honestly hard to say that last year means much given that there was just no data on him to see if there was any bounceback from his terrible 2019. A guy with huge swing and miss issues and big-time injuries who hadn't played above high-A isn't typically someone teams will want to try to deal with, especially knowing the Royals probably wouldn't make a deal for them to keep him. So it might mean something, but also might not, which is not the answer you wanted, but last year just made things so murky.
Any rebuilding team might be willing to roster a guy with his kind of power. Akil Baddoo was a Rule 5 pick just last year. Lots of teams that have no aspirations to compete would take a shot.
Which of those selected were in 2021 Spring Training? Is that a typical recipe for who the organization likes? I consider myself a serious fan of baseball and the royals and I don't recall what role the Arizona Fall League plays or who have been sent there in the past.
If I recall, Matias was there. I think Lacy was part of camp but didn’t pitch. The AFL can be to get a guy some work, see how guys respond to different competition or could just be an opportunity to see them more. It really all depends on the player.

Why kind of team risk a rule 5 on a position player?
