Lynch went down yesterday? Man, so much for starters staying healthy early. With Singer not being built up it just seems real early to have these starter innings problem…to start the season. Or is that fairly normal anymore? It just seems like day 1…you shouldn’t have to go to your bullpen for 5 innings a game. Lol

Honestly, I don't really know what's normal anymore. The last "normal" spring was 2019 and even though this one was, the WBC messed a bit with that. Just at a glance, the White Sox, for example, only have three starters who have thrown 10+ innings this spring. The Royals have four. The Guardians have four. I don't know what that means, but it's quantifiable I guess. Anyway, the point is that I kind of think it is pretty par for the course. I think teams are generally a little more careful now all the time and especially early in camp. The difference this year to past years is normally you can say you can overuse the bullpen early because of all the off days, but they only have three through the end of April.

But again, like I've said, this is a temporary issue hopefully. Singer will be built up within 7-10 days of the season starting. Bubic is in a similar spot. It's just really noticeable right now.

Drew Waters can go on the 60 day DL too right? That opens one more spot on the 40 man. But I guess it's just a temporary spot. Then Lynch might open another.

He can, but he's expected back by the end of April, so I doubt they force him to miss an additional month. Lynch would be an easy move if it's worthy of that, but we don't know yet.

Lynch might have to go to the 60 day? Dang, that’s a big blow. Even if it didn’t all come together this year you needed to find out. Now what the heck do you do if he’s 60 days out? You still have time to find out….but you really need to find out.

Whoa whoa whoa. We literally know NOTHING about his injury. That was just a possibility if it’s bad enough, which we have ZERO clue on. Gotta pump the brakes.

Glad to have the opportunity to be a subscriber. I’ve felt guilty these past months getting such cogent analysis and fine writing without offering compensation. ( And now that you have a young mouth to feed, the guilt was becoming unbearable.) I am not only a fan of the Royals, but also of your fine work. Thank you.

It was all about the guilt haha. Thanks so much for the kind words and for the subscription, Don!

Never underestimate the power of guilt! Just ask my mom.... She's 97 years old and better at inducing it than ever!

Happily upgraded to a paid subscription, I've been mooching off your content for free for too long at this point. Looking forward to what you have planned for this season!

I still think they'll go with Franmil and one of Beaty/Duffy, it doesn't really make sense to carry both when you already have Nicky on the roster. JBJ I think only has a shot to play while Waters is hurt, and that chance goes down to almost zero when he comes back. Weiss I feel like doesn't have quite enough of a track record, but Wittgren I feel has a decent chance if they're going to add a third NRI.

Thanks, Nate!

Where I'm just having trouble trying to figure out what they'll do is that they actually don't really have a bullpen spot for Wittgren unless they go full on the inventory train. I suppose they could send Coleman or Lovelady down and not put Clarke on the roster either, but that's hard to imagine too. And you're right that Duffy is redundant with Nicky on the roster, but they do seem to like him. I just keep going back and forth and I'm legitimately intrigued by how they handle it all.

I do suspect they might be trying to implement the Rays strategy of shuttling bullpen arms up and down from Triple A as needed to keep arms fresh, so whoever doesn't opt out and is on the fringe of the roster might spend a lot of time on I-29 this year.

Oh they absolutely are. Not sure exactly how frequent, but the plan is to mix and match a lot.

I mentioned just a few days ago that I expect I-29 and I-49 to be busy this summer!

I should have added "....and probably before summer officially starts on June 21."

There is hope in the unknown... and the way this is developing is keeping us on our toes for sure! I feel like you should do some NCAA type bracket pool for the opening day roster and lineup - c'mon Lesky get to work!

Ha, that's exactly how I need to be spending my time!

I find this roster crunch quite interesting. There are some tough decisions to be made, not that we’re talking about impact players, but it’s a good problem to have for a team hoping to take a step forward.

It is very interesting. This is kind of what we talked about at the start of the offseason when I was writing about how the big push for 2023 was to improve the bottom of the roster. I think they've done a good job of that.

I hope the new coaches alone are worth 10 wins but I just don't know. With the exception of Singer this is a bad rotation. I know . Greinke had an Era under 4 last year but I just don't think you can count on a 39 yr old. The problem with Greinke is that he's a 5 inning pitcher at this point in his career. Singer had a winning record because he went farther into the games than any other starter so they didn't have to use as many relievers. This team doesn't have that many dominant relievers. You bring in 4 or 5 different pitchers in a game, especially a close game someone is going to get hit especially with the shift ban. To get away from this problem starters have to go farther in the games. At least 7 innings. If they go 7 then you can get thru the game with maybe 2 relievers. I'm a big believer in the phrase the more moving parts you have the more problems you're going to have. I also don't have a lot of confidence in the starting lineup. I know that spring training doesn't mean much but the last 12 games they are 3 and 9 and look an awful lot like last year's team. Most of the guys that will be on this team have stopped hitting and although some of the pitchers look decent a couple usually get hammered. They don't have anyone in the rotation built up yet and opening day is just a week away. I know that a lot of people were high on the WBC but I was not. All of those young guys should have been in camp. Singer pitched only a few innings in three weeks. He's their best starter and he should be up to 6 inning a game right now. Pasquintino is struggling but he'll bounce back pretty quick. I think Witt needed the most work in camp. He's young and has a lot of holes in his game.

I have to think that they will consider plugging Yarbrough in at least as an opener, especially if the injury is significant. I don’t know if Carlos Hernandez has improved his stuff enough to slot into this as well. Both those guys seem like folks that you probably want to limit to no more than 3-5 inning stints, at least to begin with.

Expand full comment

It sounds like it’s not serious for Lynch. That said, I don’t think Yarbrough is someone they’re going to use for an inning or two to start a game unless the matchup is right. And I can tell you they don’t view Hernandez as a traditional starter anymore. A lot of it is just that they think he does better without four days off, but that doesn’t preclude him from working as an opener.

Cant wait to see these decisions! I feel part of the intrigue is we've never really had a forward thinking staff! Sweeney has made me think Barlow, Chapman, Clarke, Coleman, Hernandez, Garrett, Staumont, Yarbrough are in. Also leaves Snider and Lovelady off with options. Not sure what that means for Taylor or Wittgren though. But the bench is very interesting! Franmil is in. I'm really starting to think Jackie makes it initially..Eaton hasn't played much center this spring. That means one of Duffy/Beaty. I think Beaty makes a bit more sense. But Pratto talked very highly of Duffy and how much he's helped him and other young guys with Vern. That really stuck out to me. How they find the spots I have no idea lol. Ready to find out, let's go! Great work as always!

Expand full comment

I hope you're wrong about Jackie. But unfortunately I suspect that you're right!

Expand full comment

I definitely hope I'm wrong. It just seems like they don't believe Eaton can play it well enough. If that's the case, I think they'll roster Jackie at least until Drew comes back. By that time who knows what's happened..

While I hope Lynch recovers quickly, I can't say I am sad to see him out of the rotation. I was kinda hoping they sent him down to work on his command because I just don't think he is starting material right now. I am concerned with how positive he has been about his stuff, but hopefully he sees an approaching corner that he is about to turn. I have a feeling mgmt were going to have to get creative with this rotation pretty soon anyway. Little surprised to see Staumont and Lovelady sent down, but sounds like they will be back soon. I think JBJ and Duffy have to declare today if they opt out, (next chance May1) so maybe that means more news coming soon.
