I’m actually pretty happy with this list. All these guys would have been guaranteed spots last year no questions asked.
Lynch making the starting 5 is interesting to see that one play out to me. The others are interesting, but I really think they have Massey in ink and not pencil at second. At least to start. Garcia is pretty much in ink as well. Isbel….is what he is to me so he needs a good spring…but he’s a fourth outfielder in general.
The bullpen….man, they remade the entire bullpen this offseason with signing and trades. And guess what…you can do that every year. So if they really did have a decent offer for Hernandez last year in a lost season…let it be a lesson learned. Move relievers if you are not winning that year. Hernandez isn’t even a lock to make the team now.
I think if Massey is written in ink, it's either erasable or they have whiteout ready. They want him to win the job, so he has an edge, but he is guaranteed nothing, which is interesting.
I think the offer for Hernandez goes back to a bigger discussion. At some point, you have to decide if the risk that he will regress and no longer be worth that is worth it. Trade a 26-year old with four and a half years of control for a decent offer and he explodes and you're an idiot. Don't trade him and he implodes and you're an idiot. Sometimes it just doesn't work out in either direction.
Massey with the whiteout ready. I guess, but I wonder if they think Frazier is that left handed corner outfielder that they wanted more and just a backup at second. We’ll see I guess.
Damned it do, damned if don’t with trading. I get it. I just think as a general rule, if you move a reliever and he explodes so be it. Most of the time it isn’t going to happen. You can be more cautious with other positions obviously, but horse trade those relievers JJ.
My point was more….it didn’t take that much money and a trade or two (worth it a different discussion) to completely remake the bullpen. I just think that can be done every year is all.
Spring has my head in the clouds and I am convinced Massey, Garcia, Isbel and MJ will all come out with stronger bats this year. I wish I had the same confidence in Eaton, because it is fun to watch him chasing down balls. I really have bought into the depth and increased competition for spots. If they flounder to begin season I will be convinced it is the QT curse.
It’s probably Lynch—and then all the others. If he takes the number 5 spot, that’s a really good sign for him and the team.
Oh it's absolutely Lynch above anyone else. If I didn't write them alphabetically, he'd have been first for sure.

It absolutely can be done every year if needed and it should be in many situations.
Has to be Lynch.
He's definitely number one and it's not close.

4 for 53 for Eaton is generous. I still have the screen shot from May 9th when he was 1 for 30.
