If a team wants Massey at all, why wouldn't they have just signed Frazier themselves and kept their trade pieces? You and I agree that Massey makes more sense in the long-term, but if you're trading for him or signing Frazier I think I'd rather sign Frazier and then see how things look for second basemen in my system and available in the next off-season.
I think teams would rather have Massey because he's already a similar player to Frazier and has upside along with cheap control. It's the same reason why I'd rather have Massey. And given that a trade likely isn't Massey alone for something, you can get multiple pieces back for one piece if that's the route they take. It's a little tough to get specific without a deal, but let's say the Marlins are willing to trade Puk for Massey and Noah Cameron (just pulling a random prospect's name out of a hat), I'd rather have Massey and the potential of Cameron than Frazier.
I guess in that scenario I'd still rather have Puk and Frazier. Especially if I'm the Marlins and I think the playoffs are a possibility this year. But I guess I can see your point.
I can see both sides, but I do think there's big value in trading a reliever for five years of control and a prospect who you think could be something that is greater than a journeyman and that reliever.
Does it really matter if they go with who they have? No, of course not and competition isn’t a bad thing…so I guess that’s fine. But man, I can’t wrap my head around this one unless there is a trade. I don’t get the need for a left handed hitting infielder to be honest at all. I know they said that’s what they wanted but I don’t know why.
I can’t wrap my head around it even if there is a trade. You already have Massey and Loftin. One (or both) should be your second baseman this season (and you already have a utility player). This looks like some of the moves they made last offseason that made no sense. I had hoped we were past that.
Not to say that a head scratcher move is fine, but if a team makes as many moves as the Royals have this winter and the biggest "huh?" move is $4.5 million for one year, I'm not going to be too upset in the grand scheme. But yeah, I don't get it.
Nothing like the duplicotous, triplicotous or even quadplicotous move to get us Royals fans scratching their heads.... I was having the same head-scratching conversation with a friend and this popped into my head. Something brewing with Garcia and an arm for a more traditional third baseman and Frazier then backs up the trade piece at third?
"The Royals have said and backed it up with their offseason actions that guys aren’t going to be given roster spots."
Yea, I think this is it. JJ talked about taking advantage of option years, and Massey has options remaining. So I think he's going to AAA to work on his game, and they'll have Frazier/Hampson at second, with maybe a shot at Samad Taylor or Nick Loftin earning a bench spot. If Frazier is good, maybe he gets flipped in July. If he sucks, he probably gets released in July.
But I think last year has made them terrified of not having enough depth.
Not only do I think no-one "loves" this trade, but I also think I heard the collective groan of royals fans when looking at Frazier. Maybe because it came so soon after being ok with Hampson? I was hoping you would make me feel better about this move, I guess the thought of Massey simmering in AAA for a bit is somewhat soothing.
Could this be the third base move (as in it was actually 2b)?
Maybe the trade for a closer is actually for a proven reliever with closing potential for a couple of royals potential relievers?
I am just ready for opening day when we know who is playing where and what the lineup is going to be (oh, wait....)
On one hand, yeah, groans for sure and they were deserved. On the other hand, I much prefer groaning about a one-year deal for a relatively inconsequential player than groaning about the two-year deal for a starter to put up a 6+ ERA.
Give Loftin a chance instead of overpaying another retread. I understand he’s right handed, but an older, below average left handed hitter doesn’t do anything except get in the way.
The thing I keep coming back to is...

Well thats a real bummer.

I never understood the desire either, so I'm hopeful it'll make more sense here in the next few days.

Maybe, but Frazier hasn't played much third and his arm would be kind of a disaster there.
When you have four second basemen, you have no second basemen.
I guess I prefer stockpiling second basemen to first basemen like they used to do.
All off-season I’ve thought that Maikel Garcia would be traded. I keep trying to match him up with the Giants.
Camilo Doval would look good in Royals blue.
I could see Garcia to the Giants making sense. I'm not sure they'd move Doval for him, but maybe.
I’m sure it would take more than Garcia (as a SS obviously…) to get Doval.
But I think having a real SS would allow the Giants to move Marco Luciano (Giants’ #2 prospect) to a position he’s more suited for.
It might mean showcasing Garcia at SS w little more in the spring.
Also - What the heck do I know??? But if it happens, I’m gonna look like frickin’ Nostradamus. : )

Massey 10 out of 10. I thought Massey looked like he belonged . Just hoping to find out I guess.
